نَأَتwent far away بِصَدوفَwith Ṣadūf عَنكَfrom you نَوىًa separating journey عَنوجُwinding
وَجُنَّand was maddened بِذِكرِهاby remembering her القَلبُthe heart اللَجوجُstubborn
A winding journey carried Ṣadūf far from you,
and the stubborn heart went mad at the thought of her,
غَداةَon the morning غَدَتdeparted حُمولُهُمُtheir litters وَفيهِمand among them
ضَحاappeared شَخصٌa figure إِلىtoward قَلبيmy heart يَهيجُstirs
on the morning their litters departed, and among them
a figure came into view, stirring my heart.
سَكَنَّthey dwelt الغَورَal-Ghawr, the lowlands مَربَعَهُنَّtheir spring abode حَتّىuntil
رَأَينَthey saw الأَرضَthe land قَدalready جَعَلَتhad begun تَهيجُto wither
They dwelt in al-Ghawr, their spring abode, until
they saw the land had begun to wither.
وَصِفنَand they summered بِهِin it فَقُلنَthen they said لَناfor us بِنَجدٍin Najd
مِنَfrom الحَرِّthe heat الَّذيthat نَلقىwe endure فُروجُavenues of relief
And they summered there, then said, “In Najd we have
relief from the heat we endure.”
فَعالَينَso they raised الحُمولَthe litters عَلىonto نَواجٍswift she-camels
عَلائِفَfodder-fed لَمhad not تُلَوِّحهاworn them thin المُروجُthe meadows
So they raised the litters onto swift she-camels,
fodder-fed, not worn thin by grazing in the meadows.
غَدَونَthey set out at dawn فَقُلنَthen they said أَعواءٌAʿwāʾ مَقيلٌa noonday resting place
لَكُمfor you فَاِنحواso head لِذاكَfor that place وَلاand do not تَعوجواturn aside
They set out at dawn and said, “Aʿwāʾ is a noonday resting place
for you; so head there, and do not turn aside.”
وَرُحنَand they journeyed at evening فَبِتنَthen they spent the night فَوقَabove البِئرِthe well حَتّىuntil
بَداappeared لِلناظِرِto the watcher الصُبحُthe dawn البَليجُradiant
And they journeyed at evening, then spent the night above the well until
the radiant dawn appeared to the watcher.
كَأَنَّهُمُas though they were عَلىon البَوباةِal-Bawbāh نَخلٌpalm trees
أُمِرَّwas run لَهاfor them بِذيat Dhū صَعبٍṢaʿb خَليجُan irrigation channel
On al-Bawbāh they seemed like palm trees
for which an irrigation channel had been run at Dhū Ṣaʿb.
فَماso does not يَدريknow المُخَبِّرُthe informant أَيَّwhich جِزعٍvalley bend
مِنَamong الأَجزاعِthe valley bends يَمَّمَتِheaded toward الحُدوجُthe howdahs
So the informant does not know which valley bend,
among all the valley bends, the howdahs have headed toward.
