أَلَمَّcame visiting خَيالٌan apparition مِنfrom سُلَيمىSulayma فَأَرَّقاand kept me awake
هُدوءًin the night's stillness وَلَمand had not يَطرُقcome by night هُنالِكَthere مَطرَقاa night visit
A vision of Sulayma came and kept me awake,
in the night's stillness, where it had never come calling before.
أَلَمَit came بِبَطحاءِto the gravelly plain of الكَديدِal-Kadid وَصُحبَتيwhile my companions
هُجودٌasleep فَزادَso it increased القَلبَthe heart حُزناًin sorrow وَشَوَّقَand stirred longing
It came to the gravelly plain of al-Kadid, while my companions
slept; it deepened my heart's sorrow and stirred its longing.
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her أَهلاًwelcome بِكُمto you (plural) إِذwhen طَرَقتُمُyou came by night (plural)
فَقَدfor indeed زُرتِyou visited صَبّاًa lovesick man ياO قُتَيلَQutayl مُؤَرَّقاkept sleepless
So I said to her, “Welcome to you, now that you have come by night;
for you have visited a sleepless lover, O Qutayl.”
فَباتَتthen she spent the night تُعاطينيoffering me عِذاباًsweet draughts حَسِبتُهاI thought them
مِنَfor الطيبِfragrance مِسكاًmusk أَوor رَحيقاًpure wine مُعَتَّقاwell-aged
Then all night she offered me sweet draughts I thought
were, for their fragrance, musk or pure, well-aged wine.
فَبِتُّso I spent the night قَريرَcontent العَينِof eye آخِرَthe last part of لَيلَتيmy night
أَلاعِبُI dally with فيهاduring it واضِحَfair الجيدِof neck أَعنَقاlong-necked
So I spent the last of my night with eyes at ease,
dallying through it with a beauty whose neck was fair and long.
فَبِتناso we spent the night بِتِلكَin that الحالِstate إِذwhen صاحَcried out ناطِقٌa caller
وَبَيَّنَand became clear مَعروفُthe familiar sign الصَباحِof dawn فَصَدَّقاthus confirmed it
So we were spending the night thus when a caller cried out,
and dawn's familiar sign grew clear, confirming the call.
