A visitor came to us, to my delight.

If only that visitor had not hurried!

When our visitor came to us one night, afraid

Of the eyes of treacherous reproachers,

And came to us in headlong haste,

While the clan’s mules were not yet saddled.

    “O Abu al-Khattab, have you

Any faithful messenger who could be sent

With what I hide and keep concealed

From everyone?” I did not consent.

Then she let me taste, unhurriedly,

A sweet mouth, its canine teeth not overlapping.

We imagine fragrant wine within it,

And the choicest wine, and sweet, clear water.
