Praise be to God at our evening and our morning.

My Lord has brought us morning and evening with goodness.

Lord of the upright faith—its treasuries never run dry.

They are full; His dominion encompasses the horizons.

Is there no prophet from among us to tell us

how far our destination lies from the beginning of our course?

    وَبَينَما نَقتَني الأَولادَ أَفنانا

    While our fathers were raising us, they perished;

and while we raise children, He brings us to our end.

And we have learned—if only knowledge could benefit us—

that the last of us will join the first.

And I have wondered—though there is nothing strange in death—

why our living weep for our dead.

O Lord, never make me an unbeliever,

and make faith my heart's innermost secret forever.

And mingle my frame with it, and mingle my skin with it,

and flesh and blood, as long as I am given human life.

Indeed, I seek refuge in Him for whom the pilgrims made pilgrimage,

and those who raise pillars for God's religion,

submitting themselves to Him during their pilgrimage,

seeking no price in exchange for God's reward.

    فَكُلُّهُم قائِلٌ للدينِ أَيّانا

    And for people, the coming of their Hour is long delayed;

so each of them says of the Judgment, 'When?'

on the days when their Christians meet their Messiah,

and those who are his loving, intimate companions.

They helped him—their god, as they said—

and sent him out to scent the rain, moving in short steps [uncertain],

scraping their flanks bare [uncertain]; they had removed no grime,

nor picked out lice and nits for them.

    واِخلعَ ثِيابَكَ مِنها وَاُنجُ عُريانا

    Do not mix foul things with something pure;

strip off your clothes to rid yourself of them, and escape naked.

Every person will be repaid for his loan, whether good

or evil, and requited as he himself requited.

She said, 'He meant us harm'; I said to her,

'Disgraced is he when he utters falsehood as slander.'

And He opened our ears so that we might live by them,

and hollowed out ear canals and ears for hearing.

How sweet life was when bliss endured for us!

And whoever lives will face terrors and sorrows.

Whoever is dejected and vexed by some evil,

then may vexation increase in his breast as long as he lives.
