    وَالصوفَّ نَجتَزُّهُ ما أَدفأَ الوَبَرُ

    And cotton we sow in her, then wear it;

    And wool we shear—how warm the animal hair is!

    She is our dwelling; we seek no substitute for her.

    How merciful the earth is—yet we are ungrateful!

    تُعيِي الأَطِباءَ لا يُلوي لَها السُبُرُ

    And the spear's thrust into enemies pierces deep;

    It baffles physicians; probes cannot cope with it.

    وَنَحنُ أَبناؤُها لَو أَنَنا شُكُرُ

    From her we were created, and our mother had been created;

    And we are her children, if only we were grateful.

    And the day appointed for them to be gathered in throngs

    Is the Day of Mutual Loss, when caution is of no avail.

    Gathered together with the summoner, as though they were

    A swarm of locusts, swept along by the wind and scattering.

    وَأُنزِلَ العَرشُ وَالميزانُ وَالزُبُرُ

    And they were brought forth onto a level, barren plain;

    And the Throne, the Balance, and the scriptures were sent down.

    And they were called to account for what no one had tallied

    Among them; in a day like that there is a lesson.

    وَآخَرونَ عَصَوا مَأواهُمُ السَقَرُ

    So among them is one joyful, content with his resurrection;

    And others disobeyed; their abode is Saqar.

    Their keepers say, 'What was there among you?

    Had no warners come to you from your Lord?'

    They said, 'Yes; then we obeyed masters who grew insolent,

    And the length of this life, and our years, deluded us.'

    ما لَكُمُ إِلا السَلاسِلُ وَالأَغلالُ وَالسُعُرُ

    They said, 'Remain in God's torment;

    You have nothing but chains, shackles, and blazing fires.'

    فَما اِستَطاعوا لَهُ صَرفاً وَلا اِنتَصَروا

    And they were destroyed by a torment that struck their last remnant;

    So they could not turn it aside, nor defend themselves.

    So that is their life; they do not depart from it,

    Throughout their stay, even if they cry out and even if they grow weary.

    And others on the Heights have set their hopes

    On a garden ringed with pomegranates and greenery.

    مُكَفَّرٌ عَنهُمُ الأَخباثُ وَلوَزَرُ

    Among them are men whose sustenance rests with the All-Merciful;

    Their evil deeds and burden of sin are expiated.

    هوَ السَلَيطَطُ فَوقَ الأَرضِ مُستَطِرُ

    Indeed, all creatures are God's subjects;

    He is the Sovereign, holding sway above the earth.

    And no created thing endures before God's face,

    Except the sky, and except the earth and the mountains.

    يُحيِيهُمُ اللَهُ في أَيديهِم الزُبُرُ

    If anyone could escape, it would be priests;

    God brings them to life, with the scriptures in their hands.

    And one versed in piety is not like one ignorant of it,

    Nor is the sighted like a blind man with no sight.

    إِذا عَميتَ فَقَد يَجلو العَمى الخَبَرُ

    So ask people about what you do not know;

    When you are blind, information may dispel blindness.
