ياO عَذِليmy reproacher قَدindeed كُنتُI was قَبلَكَbefore you عاذِلاًa reproacher
حَتّىuntil اِبتُليتُI was afflicted فَصِرتُso I became صَبّاًlovesick ذاهِلاbewildered
O reproacher, before you I too was once a reproacher,
O my reproacher, I was indeed a reproacher before you,
until I was afflicted and became lovesick, dazed.
Until I was afflicted and so became lovesick and bewildered.
الحُبُّlove أَوَّلُat first ماwhen يَكونُit is مَجانَةًfrivolity
فَإِذاbut when تَحَكَّمَit takes command صارَit becomes شُغلاًa preoccupation شاغِلاall-consuming
Love, when it first begins, is but reckless folly;
Love, at first, is frivolity;
but once it takes command, it becomes an all-consuming care.
But when it takes command, it becomes an all-consuming preoccupation.
أَرضىI am content فَيَغضَبُyet he grows angry قاتِليmy slayer فَتَعَجَّبواso marvel, all of you
يَرضىis content القَتيلُthe slain وَلاand not يُرَضّيappeases القاتِلاthe slayer
I am content, and my slayer grows angry—marvel at that!
I am content, yet my slayer grows angry—so marvel!
The slain man is content, yet does not satisfy the slayer.
The slain is content, yet does not appease the slayer.
