حَتَّىuntil رأَىsaw النَّاظِرُthe watcher الشِّعرىSirius مُبَيَّنَةًclearly revealed
لمَّاwhen دَنَاdrew near مِنfrom صَلاةِthe prayer الفَجرِof dawn يَنصَرِفُhe departs
Until the watcher saw Sirius clearly revealed,
When he drew near, coming away from the dawn prayer,
فيin حُمرَةٍa redness لاnot بَياضَthe whiteness الصُّبحof dawn أَغرَقَهاoverwhelmed it
ولاnor عَلاlifted اللَّيلُthe night عَنهاfrom it فَهوَso it مُنكشِفُclearing away
In a redness that dawn’s whiteness had not overwhelmed,
Nor had night lifted from it; it was clearing away.
تَهلهلَgrew threadbare اللّيلُthe night لمdid not تلحقcatch up بِظُلمَتِهِin its darkness
فَوتَthe lead النَّهارِof day قَليلاًa little فهيَso it تَزدَلِفُdraws nearer
Night grew threadbare; in its darkness it had not caught up with
The day’s lead, even a little; so it draws nearer.
لاnot ييأسُdespairs اللَّيلُthe night مِنهاof it حينَwhen يَتبَعُهُit follows it
ولاnor النَّهَارُthe day بِهَاconcerning it لِلَّيلِto the night يَعتَرِفُconcedes
Night does not despair of it as it follows the day,
Nor does day concede it to night.
