And after union she brought you new estrangement.

at parting, wearing gold beads and coral,

    مِن وَحشِ أَعفَرَ أَو مِن وَحشِ نَيّانا

    from the wild herds of Aʿfar or of Nayyan;

stream-end hollows bursting with herbage and ḥujrān.

all but turning away from her and forsaking her.

another, where the dragonfly spends the day bewildered.

And you will not roam any land you visit

without finding guests of God there,

among His creatures: He clothes them and provides for them

day after day, and never asks a price.

distant from them, nor heedless of them.

a command the nearest convey to the farthest of us:

a decree through which God protected His servants,

so they became brothers in God's Book,

all who drink water, willing and angry alike.

in battle ranks, nor in cavalry horsemen,

like dawn, which anyone awake recognizes,

on the morning they prayed, with eyes humbly lowered:

they increased the gratitude and faith of our men of understanding.

from their household, a light and a proof.

He deemed al-Walid worthy of it, and made him king,

and chose from us the one He approves, and pleased us.

and our affairs to the best of us in faith and the strongest,

their utmost sincere loyalty, in private and in public.

pleasure, and disobedience to him as disobedience to God.

For you are rain that, by God's leave, He has sent

as life-giving showers for Muslims, and renewal for the earth.

a blessing from God, through which He increased the Muslims'

piety; and, praise be to God, it brought understanding.
