Indeed, a man who hopes for fidelity to a covenant

with any of Sulaym but ʿAwf is surely doomed.

May God reward Riʿl and Qunfudh for the day of al-Marj

with a generous reward on the day when innermost thoughts are tested.

So Dhakwān bore no blame for a call

they raised; but Ibn Ḥayda was weak.

Had he made al-Jaḥḥāf hear it, or had its sound reached

Ṣubaygh ibn Khawlī, the women in howdahs would have been safe.

So I said to her, “Travel on, woman in your howdah; you will never see

humiliation with your own eyes after Marj al-Ḍayāzin.

And travel to the people whose father

is feared in Mecca for his fang and claws.”
