    I charge Shurayh, should I die, and Miḥṣan,

    to lend aid in grave adversity and shun forbidden deeds,

    and to defend the neighbor who entwines his cord

    with their two cords, and to care for the oath-bound ally.

    وَإِن سالَمَ المَولى عَلَيكَ فَسالِمِ

    And if your ally wages war, join his war;

    and if your ally makes peace to your detriment, make peace.

    For you are among the fair-faced nobles of Jābir’s house,

    and among the sons of Shibl, and among the ʿAlāqim.

    And you have gained a branch of Luʾayy son of Ghālib—

    pillars that were among the finest pillars.
