هَلIs there بِاِدِّكارِin remembering الحَبيبِthe beloved مِنany حَرَجِblame
أَمOr هَلis there لِهَمِّfor the sorrow of الفُؤادِthe heart مِنany فَرَجِrelief
Can there be any blame in remembering the beloved?
Is there any blame in remembering the beloved?
Or any relief from the heart’s anguish?
Or is there any relief for the heart's sorrow?
أَمOr كَيفَhow أَنسىcan I forget مَسيرَناour journey حُرُماًin pilgrim consecration
يَومَthe day حَلَلناwe alighted بِالنَخلِat the palm groves مِنof أَمَجِAmaj
Or how could I forget our journey, consecrated as pilgrims,
Or how can I forget our journey as consecrated pilgrims,
the day we encamped at al-Nakhl, coming from Amaj?
the day we alighted at the palm groves of Amaj;
يَومَthe day يَقولُsays الرَسولُthe messenger قَدalready أَذِنَتshe has given leave
فَأتِso come عَلىwith غَيرِno رِقبَةٍsurveillance فَلِجِthen enter
That day the go-between said, “She has given leave—
the day the messenger says, 'She has given leave:
then come unobserved, and enter.”
so come with no one watching, then enter.'
أَقبَلتُI approached أَمشيwalking إِلىtoward رِحالِهِمُtheir lodgings
فيin نَفحَةٍa breeze نَحوَtoward ريحِهاher scent الأَرِجِfragrant
I came forward, walking toward their tents,
I came walking toward their camp,
in a fragrant waft, toward her redolent scent.
in a breeze, toward her fragrant scent.

يُصِمُّنيdeafens me صَوتُthe sound of حَليِهاher jewelry الهَزِجِjingling
Her hands descend over the sheer fabric of her finery;
Her hands move down with her gauzy finery;
the lilting chime of her jewelry deafens me.
the sound of her jingling jewelry deafens me.
تَشِفُّshe reveals عَنfrom behind واضِحٍa radiant face إِذاwhen سَفَرَتshe unveils
لَيسَis not بِذيbearing آمَةٍa scar وَلاnor سَمِجِugly
When she unveils, she reveals a radiant face,
She reveals a radiant face when she unveils,
bearing neither a blemish nor anything unsightly.
neither scarred nor ugly.
