    Ah, you obstinate, tormented heart!

Why this youthful longing and folly, when the head is gray?

I was stirred by the doves' song, and at times

I felt youthful longing; even a noble man may falter and be stirred.

Ah, Layla is but a guileless oryx doe.

And Sa'da amid her fair-skinned peers—a herd of oryx.

And the elder Sallama is a pool and a meadow.

And the younger Sallama is a pampered gazelle.
