The carefree man says to me, having sat through the night,

in the depths of night, with baggage bundles bound to him:

Is it a phantom of Su‘ad that troubles you, so that for her

you watch the stars, like one lost in love?

And she, if you are taken with her, is full-hipped

among women; her speech is soft and sweet.

Her earring hangs high; her front teeth gleam,

and she is tender in youth, of excellent character.

But the man of the valley of Rahw has escaped,

and his companion; you are answerable for him.

I demand a reckoning in a matter of equal requital:

I pass the night awake, while its wrongdoer's night is full of sleep.

    فَظَلَّ لَها بِنا يَومٌ غَشومُ

    I took vengeance on him for what his hands had done;

so a ruthless day unfolded, through us, in that cause.

We slit their necks until we drew back,

and the nostril of Death's nose lay decayed.

And if the vultures alight upon me one day,

then the flesh of one sought for bounty is noble flesh.

And many a kinsman from whom Time has turned away

has no protection among his kin.

Time struck the safer of his two flint-stones,

and companion and close friend cast him aside.

I stretched out to him a right hand from my wing,

with abundant plumage and a tenderly sheltering underwing.

I stand by him against the days' hardships; indeed,

when the base men fail him, I reproach them.
