أَلا أَبلِغ بَني فَهمِ بنِ عَمروٍ

أَلا أَبلِغ بَني فَهمِ بنِ عَمروٍ

عَلى طولِ التَنائي وَالمَقالَه

عَلى طولِ التَنائي وَالمَقالَه

Listen, tell the sons of Fahm ibn ʿAmr,

Tell the tribe of Fahm son of Amr

despite the long separation and the talk,

Throughout the prolonged discourse and speech

مَقالَ الكاهِنِ الحامِيِّ لَمّا

مَقالَ الكاهِنِ الحامِيِّ لَمّا

رَأى وَقَد أَنهَبتُ مالَه

رَأى وَقَد أَنهَبتُ مالَه

the words of the Ḥāmī soothsayer, when

The words of the zealous priest when

he saw me, after I had given his wealth over to plunder.

He saw I had plundered his wealth

رَأى قَدَمَيَّ وَقعُهُما حَثيثٌ

رَأى قَدَمَيَّ وَقعُهُما حَثيثٌ

كَتَحليلِ الظَليمِ دَعا رِئالَه

كَتَحليلِ الظَليمِ دَعا رِئالَه

He saw my two feet, their tread swift,

He saw my feet walking briskly

like the running of a male ostrich calling his chicks.

Like the melting of darkness, he called his cows

رَأى بِهِما عَذاباً كُلَّ عامٍ

رَأى بِهِما عَذاباً كُلَّ عامٍ

لِخَثعَمَ أَو بَجيلَةَ أَو ثُمالَه

لِخَثعَمَ أَو بَجيلَةَ أَو ثُمالَه

He saw in them both torment every year

He saw through them torment every year

for Khathʿam, or Bajīlah, or Thumālah.

For Khath'am, Bajilah or Thumalah

وَشَرٌّ كانَ صُبَّ عَلى هَذيلٍ

وَشَرٌّ كانَ صُبَّ عَلى هَذيلٍ

إِذا عَلِقَت حِبالُهُمُ حِبالَه

إِذا عَلِقَت حِبالُهُمُ حِبالَه

And a scourge had been poured upon Hudhayl,

Evil was poured upon Hudhayl

whenever their ropes became entangled with his.

When their ropes were tied to his cows

وَيَومُ الأَزدِ مِنهُم شَرُّ يَومِن

وَيَومُ الأَزدِ مِنهُم شَرُّ يَومِن

إِذا بَعُدوا فَقَد صَدَّقتُ قالَه

إِذا بَعُدوا فَقَد صَدَّقتُ قالَه

And the Azd's day among them was the worst day;

And the day of the Azd against them was the evilest day

when they were far away, I indeed made his words come true.

When they went far, then I spoke the truth
