فَهمٌ وَعَدوانُ قَومٍ إِن لَقيتَهُمُ

فَهمٌ وَعَدوانُ قَومٍ إِن لَقيتَهُمُ

خَيرُ البَرِيَّةِ عِندَ كُلِّ مُصَبِّحِ

خَيرُ البَرِيَّةِ عِندَ كُلِّ مُصَبِّحِ

Fahm and Adwan—a people who, if you meet them,

Understanding and hostility of a people, if you meet them,

are the best of creation to every visitor at dawn.

Are the best of creations in the view of all who admonish,

لا يَفخَلونَ وَلا تَطيشُ رِماحُهُم

لا يَفخَلونَ وَلا تَطيشُ رِماحُهُم

أَهلٌ لِغُرِّ قَصائِدي وَتَمَدُّحي

أَهلٌ لِغُرِّ قَصائِدي وَتَمَدُّحي

They do not [falter?], nor do their spears go astray;

They do not act rashly, nor do their spears miss,

worthy of my radiant poems and my praise.

They are worthy of the boastful verses and my praise.
