عَفا مِن سُلَيمى ذو عَنانٍ فَمُنشِدُ

عَفا مِن سُلَيمى ذو عَنانٍ فَمُنشِدُ

فَأَجزاعُ مَأثولٍ خَلاءٌ فَبَدبَدُ

فَأَجزاعُ مَأثولٍ خَلاءٌ فَبَدبَدُ

Dhū ʿAnān has lost Sulaymā’s traces, and Munshid too;

The one with loosened reins forgave Sulayma, so I became a singer,

And the valley bends of Maʾthūl lie deserted, and Badbad too.

yet the houses of Athoul lie empty, in decay and ruin.
