Her people accused me and Layla al-Akhyaliyya

Of things that never existed, and I knew not what they were.

Would that what she endures, what saddens her soul,

And what they heap upon her, lay between me and my clothes.

Will your people hasten to the door? For I

Have become a distant dweller among them, far away.

Hold fast to al-Akhyaliyya's cord, and cast aside

People's hostility over her, and the lowly slanderers.

If you deny me Layla and the sweetness of her speech,

You will not deny me weeping and rhymes,

Nor the trotting of pale camels snorting through their nose-rings,

When we raise for them the doubled reins.

Why did you not, when you forbade her speech, also forbid

A vision that comes to me across the distance, guiding me?

Had I been the guardian of her rights, I would have protected her,

But Layla has guardians other than me.

    فليتَ الهوى باللائمينَ مكانيا

    The reproachers blame you over her, offering sincere counsel;

Would that love beset the reproachers in my stead!

Had passion obeyed me in turning from love of Layla,

I would have obeyed—but passion has defied me.

And how many a friend's bounty I have passed by

To reach you—and many a thirsty man who would have given me drink had I come.

By my life, you have kept me sleepless, O dove

Of al-Aqiq, and made one already weeping weep.

And I was grave and self-possessed, unstirred

By the owl's cry, even were I to wail a Yemeni lament.

And had Layla been in a distant land,

In the farthest valley of the lands of humankind and jinn,

She would be the riders' talk, or toward her would turn,

When the riders spoke aloud, my heart.

Layla spends the spring at al-Mudayyih, then al-Hima,

And summers by the watercourses in the valley of al-Aqiq.

I remembered you in Tihama's lowlands, and up rose

The sorrows of love, until they reached my collarbones.

I kept driving the pale camels onward, until it was as though

Their padded feet saw hot coals among the pebbles.

At Thamdayn Layla's fire appeared, while my companions,

At Far' al-Ghada, drove swift young she-camels.
