يابنَO son of الخَلائِفِthe caliphs ماwhy ليfor me بَعدَafter تَقرِبَةٍdrawing near

إِلَيكَto you أُقصىI am kept away وَفيand in حالَيكَyour two ways ليfor me عَجَبُastonishment
O son of caliphs, why, after drawing near
O son of caliphs, I have no more means of access to you
to you, am I cast away? I marvel at your two ways.
Though you are most worthy, yet your state amazes me
ماwhy ليfor me أُذادُI am driven away وَأُقصىand kept at a distance حينَwhen أَقصِدُكُمI approach you

Why am I driven away and kept at a distance when I approach you,
I gain no benefit, though you are my ultimate desire, when I seek you
as the mange of a diseased creature is avoided?
As the itchy skin is irritated by the touch of clothes
كَأَنَّنيas though I لَمnot يَكُنthere was بَينيbetween me وَبَينَكُمand between you

As though there had never been between me and you
It is as if there had never been any ties or kinship binding us
a covenant, a friendship to be honored, or kinship.
No foster-mother's milk, no lineage bringing us close
لَوif كانَwere بِالوُدِّthrough affection يُدنىone were brought near مِنكَto you أَزلَفَنيwould bring me nearer

If affection brought one near you, I would be drawn
Had you wished to draw me near through affection's bonds
close to you by affection, concern, and tender care.
Kinship and mercy would have brought me to your side

below me; whenever they saw me approaching, they scowled.

If they hear good of me they conceal it, while if evil
evil, they spread it; if they hear nothing, they lie.
They broadcast it, and if naught, they fabricate lies

They saw you turn away from me when we met, and so
Marking your aloofness to me when we meet
they have said that my cord to you has been severed.
They spread the rumor that my rope with you is severed

The spiteful one rejoices at our broken state,
So the gloaters rejoice at our estrangement
while the sincere well-wisher, full of concern, is dejected.
While true well-wishers grieve at the rift between us

until you discerned upon whom the lie rebounds?
Until the source of falsehood becomes clear?

be he a maternal uncle, a neighboring kinsman, or a distant neighbor.
Where is the fidelity, the truth, at whose service came the Books?

Where are the pledged protection and the right that
I compose poetry, refining and versifying it
the Scriptures were sent down to preserve and honor?
Like threading pearls and gold to form a necklace

From the furthest land until I am encamped near your abode

Affection and sincerity lead me, wrenching me away
I who lodged as your neighbor and guest under your protection
from the farthest land, until my dwelling is close by.
Whose home the Arabs could see in your shadow
وَكُنتُand I was جاراًa neighbor وَضيفاًand a guest مِنكَfrom you فيin خَفَرٍprotection

قَدindeed أَبصَرَتhave seen مَنزَليmy dwelling فيin ظِلِّكَyour shade العَرَبُthe Arabs
I was a neighbor and a guest under your protection;
For you to debar me was like a fire in the wilderness
the Arabs have seen my dwelling beneath your shade.
Fanned by the winds, ever fed with more fuel
وَكانَand was مَنعُكَyour protection ليof me كَالنارlike fire فيon عَلَمٍa mountain

Your protection of me was like a fire atop a mountain
Yet your displeasure was not a thing I confessed to myself
standing alone, its radiance kindled by wind and firewood.
Nor could I imagine deserving it
وَإِنand indeed سُخطَكَyour displeasure شَىءٌsomething لَمnot أُناجِI whispered بِهِabout it

And your displeasure is something I never whispered about
No, some came to you with wicked and lying words
to myself, nor did I do anything to earn it.
Seeking my harm, and accomplished their desire
لكِنbut أَتاكَcame to you بِقَولٍwith a statement كاذِبٍfalse أَثِمٍsinful

But to you there came, with false and sinful words,
Never did I know you to break off from a kinsman
men who wronged me and achieved against me what they sought.
Or refuse a right that was binding upon you
وَماand not عَهِدتُكَI knew you فيماover what زَلَّwent astray تَقطَعُyou cut off ذاone possessed of

I never knew you, for a lapse, to cut off one
Or afflict one who bore what pained him
of kin, or deny a right that is due.
Or importune him with upbraiding beyond due measure
وَلاnor تُوَجَّعُyou feel pained مِنby حَقٍّa duty تَحَمَّلُهُyou bear it

Nor to feel burdened by an obligation you shoulder,
I strove with all my power to please you as I should
nor to follow your gifts with bitterness.
And so attain the intimacy won by your peers
فَقَدso indeed تَقَرَّبتُI sought nearness جُهداًwith all my effort مِنto رِضاكَyour approval بِماthrough what

Yet for all my pure and true devotion, and my
had won closeness to one like you.
Praise of you, and being near, I make no headway

Yet I find that neither my sincerity nor my refining
I thought myself no stranger, now I proclaim
of praise for you, nor my kinship with you, brings me near.
Aloud that I today am in exile, an outcast

For your denying me my rights, rejecting me,
I declare that today I am estranged.
And hiding your face from me, I was content

It was not your denying my right and casting me aside,
While people who in their hearts rejoice at my woes
nor your turning your flank from me, that I expected.
Exult over me, from you to their very tonsils
أَمُشمِتٌare you causing to gloat بِيَover me أَقواماًpeople صُدورُهُمُtheir breasts

Are you making people gloat over me, people whose breasts
I thought I had taken refuge in a sure stronghold
burn against me on your account, up to their chins?
That they could not harm me, be they ever so emboldened
قَدindeed كُنتُI was أَحسَبُI thought أَنّيthat I قَدalready لَجَأتُhad taken refuge إِلىin

But He in whom I trusted to fend off those who sought
a stronghold, and that they would not harm me, even if they joined forces.
Aught of me, He it was that did not grant their wish

If you reject me, then misery and homelessness for me

Guard your honor, and know that your treatment of me
you push my hands away, I have something left, and a place to return.

Of noble lineage am I, gently nurtured, living decorously
is within earshot of foes whose rancor is sharp.
Shunning disrepute, exemplar of high manners

Surely they know that privation passes away
that banished faults; the sovereign of character is good breeding.

They know that hardship will end
What boots their greedy clutching of a right on loan?
one day, and that wealth is bound to change.
Like spoils of war it is seized, then scattered as largesse

Their wealth is held in trust, pledged to rightful duties,
No harm to them if their neighbor comes to own
like spoils amassed and then plundered.

A people who inherited glory not lightly won

A people whose inherited glory is untainted,
So let not fleeting bounty give you delight
to which non-Arabs and Arabs willingly submit.
Nor passing woes cause you grief

So do not let passing prosperity delight you,
I have left my people, nor replaced them with any other
nor let adversity that will be cut short grieve you.

I left my people, but found no replacement for them;
