إِنّيindeed I عَجِبتُI marvelled لِصَوتِat the sound of غَيثٍrain مُرسَلٍsent forth
يَغشىcovers البَرِّيَةَthe wilderness وَهُوَyet it عَنّيfrom me مُقلِعُholding back
Indeed, I marvelled at the sound of rain sent forth,
I am amazed at the sound of pouring rain
That blankets the wilderness, yet holds back from me;
Drenching the meadows though it is far from me.
وَلِمَعشَرٍand at a group لَمdid not يَبلُغواthey attain مِنof وُدَّكُمyour affection
ماwhat قَدalready بَلَغتُI attained يَقومونَthey stand وَأدفَعُwhile I am driven away
And at a group who have not attained, in your affection,
And a band of people who have not attained
What I have attained: they stand, while I am driven away.
The love you have granted me now drink their fill,
ماwhat ليfor me أُحَلّاI am driven away عَنfrom حِياضِكَyour pools مُفرَداًalone
يَرِدُcome to water الظِماءُthe thirsty فَيَشرَبونَand so they drink وَأقدَعُwhile I am turned away
Why am I alone driven from your pools,
While I remain apart, parched with thirst
While the thirsty come and drink, and I am turned away?
As they imbibe the rain and slake their thirst.
فَكَأَنَّكُمso it is as though you فيماin what مَضىhas passed مِنof عيشَتيmy life
لَمdid not تَعلَمواyou know وَتَرَواand you see هَوايَmy love وَتَسمَعواand you hear
So it is as though you, in my life gone by,
So it seems that in the life I used to live
Had never known, seen, or heard my love.
You never learned of my passion or heard my tale.
