Whose are the dwellings beside al-Ahfar,

and at Batil Damkh, or at Salʿ Juzar?

They now stand out as though only a year old,

though our last acquaintance was in ages long past.

They endured, but those who settled there did not—

    Dhat al-Nitaq, then Burqat al-Imhar,

then the meadows of Dhu Baqar, then Shaqiqah's ridge:

desolate, though once inhabited, not wastelands.

After herds brought home at dusk and pastured far away, resembling

    a valley's dense thicket, well guarded at the rear;

and mares galloping through the cold each evening,

    lean-bellied, as though they were masts;

and singing women among drinking parties, like

    white gazelles, soft of skin;

and assemblies among which noble men walked,

like jinn, their garments not striped woolen cloaks.

And when the north wind rose in the evening,

hurling dry fence-wood at the tents,

you would find us with our tent-sides raised

for the guest, where the arrow-lot players gathered,

in a gathering where they bid high for every sound slaughter-camel,

in an assembly of open-handed men, no scanty band.

And many a night-camp makes hearts throb in fear

of it, and reveal their hidden secrets.

You frequent it, restless, beside horses standing at rest

and lean camels, their saddle-frames creaking.

Until, when dawn split its skin open

for the company, they sped off once they could see.

Their resolve grew firm upon what was portended,

and their omen-birds went forth at dawn, heralding a raid.

And they set out from Nazar; a grazing herd came into view,

    long-lipped, its coat shedding.

They cross the breadth of the earth, unwearied,

as though its rough ground were desert plains to them.

So they did what they did, then left them—

with their camps deserted and their men gone.
