The dream-image visited us, a band of Yemeni riders.

And barriers stand before Layla—if only you would carry us across!

Among them are the familiar verses of the Book; and indeed

Layla habitually belies the hopes she holds out to us.

Layla did not journey by night or come calling on her errand

from the people of Rayman, except out of a desire for us.

From Himyar's highlands, where mules leave their urine—

how did you cross that distance late at night?

She spent the evening at Adhruʿ Akbad, and destined for her was

a company of riders at Linah, or riders at Sawina.

O Layla's dwelling, deserted! I demand nothing of it

except pliancy, until it learns obedience.

Zananir sends it the winds of summer,

and through the passes in al-Kawr's clefts sends them to us:

hot winds, wavering at forenoon, gentle along their flanks.

They clothe it in the evenings with trailing fringes.

They clothe it, a campsite whose familiar traces show

darkened, where the tribe long left dung-stains.

I turned aside there to greet it and question it.

They almost made me weep with longing, and wept themselves.

So I told the company: Go on—no father be yours!

I see that Layla's dwellings give us no greeting.

And a faded trail, with camels' trampled tracks upon it,

its mountain passes distant, ridge after ridge—

winds have altered it and swept across it

from every approach, along the path of the wind that reaches us.

At dawn they visit the tracks of swift-moving camels there,

until they alter part of it or make it level.

Across a barren expanse, with shimmering patches of mirage,

its sandgrouse's cries sound like our camel-driver's cry.

As though the calls of young doves there,

singing from every hollow in it,

were the voices of Nabataean women at a fortress,

who donned cloaks for mourning and put on short drawers,

in a lofty building, its stonework smeared with plaster,

where offerings used to be presented to its custodians.

The bells' sound there is never allowed to lapse by

the hands of sturdy men and dark ones who never doze.

As though their sounds, from wherever you hear them,

were the clack of carding mallets jerking the carding bows.

I trod it on a night journey until I left behind there

the full-length night, its veils appearing black,

until I discerned the way, while the deserts loomed,

bowing in the mirage, shrouded, or seeming to pray.

A sturdy, fleet she-camel took up the burden of my longing.

You would think her night-time goader mad.

She hurls rounded pebbles through the passes in leaps,

in a free-running stride that mingles many gaits.

She flings them, fearful as a she-ostrich,

as fingertips toss pebbles among odds-and-evens players.

She would keep up a swift trot, gathering it

into shoulders that thrust past the swift mounts.

And a seasoned shawhat-wood bow, solid at its cut ends,

clad in varied colors of the choicest patterned cloth—

    تَرِنُّ مِنْهُ مُتُونٌ حِينَ يَجْرِينَا

    I matched it with a winning shaft, not of mixed stock;

the shafts ring against it as they run.

I drew the shirt back from my hand, taking it,

a lone shaft drawn across the hands of men pledging ransom.

Then I departed with it, elated and rejoicing,

like an ivory bracelet kept hidden through the night.

And a gathering of women like statues, with dark pupils in white eyes,

who had known no hardship in life, as maidens or mature women,

    high-nosed, slender-waisted, sheltered in luxury

from every ailment, by permission of God, who heals us.

As though gazelles' eyes, whenever they paint their own

with black antimony, had been lent them for a while.

As though they were pale-coated gazelles, sheltered by

wild lote-trees at Ghurrah, or wild lote-trees at Darina.

They walk like sand spilling from a dune whose flanks have tilted,

flowing at times, then checked at times by damp earth,

from the sands of ʿIrnan, or the sands of Asnumah,

its damp earth clumped, lying all night shrouded in rain.

They sway their pampered limbs as they walk,

as the south wind sways Yabrin's boughs at forenoon,

or like the quivering of a Rudayni spear, passed around by

merchants' hands, who added suppleness to its shaft.

Fair women unsheathe, from their glances, for us

bright blades, and sheath those drawn blades within us.

    وإِنْ صَمَتْنَ رَأَيْتَ الدُّرَّ مَكْنُونَا

    When they speak, you see pearls scattered;

and if they fall silent, you see pearls hidden away.

You matched their wits against mine with a store

of conversation, until they grew gentler toward me,

on a pleasant night among the nights of time—

if only time's turning afterward could be trusted.

Tell Khadij, for I have heard from him

some words he sends, which reach us.

Why do you race toward us without a halter?

And yet, when we make you run, you may weary us.

You have whittled shafts that you are sending,

and we shoot at you—so watch how you shoot at us.

So keep within your reach, and know, should you meet us,

that we are sons of war: we give it drink, and it gives us drink—

    morning's poison, with straightened spearshafts,

and Mashrafi swords we deliver with our own hands.

We are ill omens if you stir up our hothead

on the day of spear-fighting, yet you find them good omens.

And a wearer of the crown, or an exalted man of rank

among ordinary people, our spearpoints have reached.

So he let war loose, driven by burning, headlong fury,

until he lay on his two palms, held captive.

And among us is a morning draught, if you desire it:

a splendid host, and eighty thousand,

and prized steeds, long-bodied and finely formed,

of Aʿwaj's line, blanketed and fed milk.

When they answer one another, they raise their neighing to

the hard sutures of the skull; they do not neigh like hackneys.

And footmen who strike helmets from the side,

with fierce blows that heroes urge one another to deal.

So do not be like one leaping about with a full belly

between two companions, until he too was bound to them.
