Ask the dwelling by the two sides of Hibirr and Wahib,

to where al-Mudayyah overlooks the rocky hills of al-Qalib.

It remained, and Kubaysha abandoned it, after

her evening rests and morning wanderings there had long endured.

And she settled at Suwaj for a stay, as though

on Suwaj’s ridge lay a tattoo pricked into a palm.

She says, “Seek profit, that wealth may flood its household”—

Kubaysha; yet piety toward God is more profitable.

Have you not learned that my sudden welcome is never faulted

by my guest, when the stripped thorn trees turn dust-gray,

and a bitter north wind blows, tearing the curtain,

almost spraying water shortly before dawn,

while the reddish-bay stallion remains covered in that wind,

    beside the curtain, assailed by the mighty, hard-striking blast;

and that I do not blame myself for what befalls me,

and scarcely rejoice in what I have gained?

Time is only two turns: in one of them

I die; in the other I seek my living, toiling.

Both have already been inscribed for me in my scroll:

life is more desirable to me, but death more restful.

When I die, announce my death with what befits me,

and condemn life: every life is sorrow-laden.

And say, “A youth through whom the old she-camel suffered; she was driven back

against her will by true-hearted gamblers and lot-arrows.”

A marked shaft strutted among them, as though

coated with yellow dye, or held to the fire and singed.

The hems of fine cloth polished its blemishes away,

and left it pure among things treasured and polished.

    إذَا سَنَحَتْ أَيْدِي المُفِيضِينَ يَبْرَحُ

    A fallen shaft, swift-running, its touch like an egg’s;

when the lot-casters’ hands swing, it springs forth.

It bears worn-bare patches; pebbles have uncovered along its sides

fine streaks left bare by the peeled-back bark.

It began the morning round-shafted; by evening it seemed,

from striking and turning in the palm, flat and broad.

Quick to emerge from darkness, when struck a single blow,

it appears while the eyes gathered around glimpse it.

Ransomed, handed over with both hands, and cursed,

stripping flesh away, surging forth, sought on loan.

When a band of Maadd borrows it,

its owner goes to cast lots ahead of the lot-casters.

I lay sleepless for lightning at night’s end; before it lay

heaped boulders and a broad rocky plateau this side of Ramman.

From a northern dark cloud: whenever I said it had passed,

it flashed, while green birds leaned low in the water.

By morning it had a cloud mass on Shurmah’s flanks,

hoarse-thundering, of Simak, pale with the downpour.

And by noon it was in Raqd’s watercourses, its flood

great deep waters, neither shallow nor dwindling into shallows.

It poured its full burden over Sharj and al-Sarif,

its rain-cloud water-carriers heavy, bowed beneath their loads.

You see every valley it swept through as though

a salt-gathering rider had made his camel kneel there.

And she summered at Kishaf, overlooking Dariyyah,

with a deep hollow and gravelly watercourse toward Habawbah.

Oh, if only we had never ceased to be as we were

at Arimah al-Kharja’, though those days recede,

among a clan who, when told, “Depart! You have been attacked!”

stood beside their baggage and held their ground.

Their defenses are sleek horses, swimming in their stride,

fresh for another run when the ornamented girth grows wet:

a young full-toothed steed, seasoned in years, with high-held nape,

ever outstripping the older horse, though the older strains forward.

He turned it back; when it resumed the gallop, it kept

pulling at the bridle’s bit and prancing.

It fights its hard-pressed rider, as though its rein

were a trimmed tree trunk, defying restraint.

And it shivers like a crossbred horse left neglected

on a north-wind morning by a lanky, trusted keeper.

And a sleek, thirst-prone mare, whose two-colored cord swings,

calmed after excessive panting and rubbed down,

like a wolf of the ghada thickets racing ahead of its cub through the dew,

in varied bursts of running, each one unrestrained.

And true-hearted youths—I have raised my voice

for them late at night, the wineskin brimming and bulging.

I entrusted the steeds’ halters to a bondman,

who, when we struck his head, did not sway.

So he spent the night struggling, after his head was gashed,

with stallions we had gathered, rearing and kicking.

And through the night it was sung to in the great bowl, as though it were

    a blood-red chestnut horse, bright-hued and white-starred.

And sometimes I urge the stout-cheeked she-camel on, her foot flung forward

by an outward-bowed shin like an ostrich’s shank.

It strikes pebbles away from a sturdy camel, as though, when

it climbs the edge of stony ground, it were a pounding stone,

when the notched al-Ablaq comes to seem,

in the heat of fiercest noon, like a flat board.
