As for appearance, ours is imposing to behold,
The rain gives us just enough to envision
Like the mountains at the valley bend of Iḍam.
Like mountains firmly rooted

As for gaining wealth, our riding camels have prevailed
Benefit has overwhelmed our ships
Before mighty rulers, through hardship and favors.
In the hands of tyrants, in good times and bad

As for equipment, we have lean, well-trained steeds,
As for tools, we have daggers and crafted weapons
Sleek-coated and sturdy, with saddle-felts and bridles.
Bare blades and piercing spears

And David’s weaving: bright, double-layered mail,
And David’s weave of layered mail
From the age of ʿĀd, and after the tribe of Iram.
From the time of Ad and after the living one from Iram

At dawn on the low plain, they cross the foothills upon
At daybreak they don their armor
The backs of seasoned leaders, clothed in dust.
Over the loins of steady, garment-rending warriors

War milks nothing from me after its prime yield,
War will not milk me of resolve after testing me
But a last draught from an untamable, grief-stricken wolf.
Except for the writhing of a defiant, mighty chief
لاَno حَرْبَwar بالحَرْبِby war يَشْفِيهاheals it الإلهGod وَيَشْand heals…

War is not healed by war; God heals it, and so does—
No war is cured by war, but God cures it
—intercession between covenant and kinship.
And in it the intercession of kinship cures
حَتَّىuntil تَشُولَshe lifts her tail لَقَاحاًpregnant بَعْدَafter قَارِحِهَاher early conception

Until she lifts her tail, pregnant after first conceiving,
Until it turns to union after estrangement
You ravage her as the wolf ravages sheep.
Make war on it as wolves make war on sheep
لاَmay not أُلْفَيَنَّI ever be found وإِيَّاكُمْand you كَعَارِمَةٍlike a troublemaking woman

May neither I nor you be found like a troublemaking woman,
I will not refuse you though you be unruly
Who, if she finds no troublemaker among people, makes trouble herself.
Unless I find among people one who takes offense
