    فنظمْتَ في الآداب لفظَك جوهرا

    Your eloquence has reached the wondrous, and beyond;

So you strung your words as jewels in the literary arts.

And you composed poetry until you almost barred everyone who

Wove rhymes among humankind from composing verse.

An understanding that almost shows you what lies beneath the darkness,

    And reveals through a faint sound what is concealed;

And an Alid discernment that has unleashed

For people, seas from the paths of eloquence.

If your speech were visible, it would be

Nothing but a radiant morning to the eyes.

I have kept reaping wisdom and elegance,

Radiant, ever since I beheld those written lines.

    If the wine-cup intoxicates, then

The passages of that speech have become more intoxicating than it.

Or if wide eyes have become enchantresses,

The passages of your poetry have become more enchanting than they.

Far be it from your diction to be compared with a likeness,

Or from your understanding's excellence to be outstripped when it races.

And even if Imru’ al-Qays were to set out challenging

You in poetic artistry, he would turn back and retreat.

Knowledge by which you trod the stars, ascending in honor,

And eminence and literary learning by which you surpassed humankind.

I am grateful to you for your request of me; and whoever

Receives kindness wishes to give thanks.

Indeed, though I have attained the utmost, until

The bright stars in the heights became my companions,

And attained what humankind could not attain,

Of every excellence, when it called, making its choice,

And gained mastery of speech when it had not been gained,

And plucked from understanding's garden until it blossomed—

I surely see all men of excellence as stars,

And you alone as the full moon, shining.
