You had the means—why were you not generous

    to the love-stricken, sorrowful one?

Yet one without means has been generous,

and one who never promised has fulfilled a pledge.

    If you shun the lover

and grow in estrangement and rejection,

then how did your temple-lock curl,

and how did your waist draw tight?

And why did your eyes grow languid,

with a languor that killed fortitude?

And you unveil a face like the morning light,

and smile to reveal teeth like hailstones,

    and make sport of lovers.

Such is love: jest and earnestness.
