We drank to the lament of gray, ring-necked doves,

and the garden's striped, dappled robes,

an aged wine whose existence had worn time away,

so it came like the fleetingness of a glance, or the delicacy of love.

As though the bright white clouds had become goblets

for us, and the wine within them were lightning's glow.

So we spent the night urging the cup along eagerly, and indeed we

drank it neat in haste, and he called for a drink,

until I saw the star setting in the west,

and morning's banners advanced from the east.

As though night's blackness, while dawn was rising,

were remnants of kohl's sweep in blue eyes.
