Victory has come to you, coupled with triumph,

Without effort; and fate has satisfied you concerning your foes.

Indeed, Commander of the Faithful, you have been first to attain

Glories no boaster has ever won.

So long as praise of you occupies my thought whenever I seek it,

May I never have to apologize for falling short.

When I see you and the people in an assembly,

They are darkness, and you are the sun and moon.

The nights have made peace with you like a defeated foe,

Unable to prevail; reflection has shown them this.

Your enemies in every land are never free

From fear of you, and so they wait forever.

Each day brings conquests for al-Aziz over

His enemies, and mighty calamities among them.

Whenever a report ends that tells of his triumph

Over them, another report always reaches them.

Time's calamities are an undefeated army

Against your enemies, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.

May an army's fleet gladden you; its servants have always been

The winds, obeying whatever it wills.

Until it brought you lions in battle, whom neither

Fear nor caution turns aside from peril.

    وأنجدتهم طِوالُ السُمْر فانتصروا

    The slender white blades made them arbiters, so they passed judgment;

And the long brown spears aided them, so they triumphed.

And polytheism was humbled before the oneness of God,

And the Romans can neither come to water nor return from it.

The white blades of swords left none of them except

Those whom dusky lips, coquetry, and modesty shielded.

People have differed over the merits of kings, but never

    Has mankind disputed your preeminence.

And how could disagreement about you visit us, when

Revelation's text and the surahs have proclaimed your excellence?

I say it of you openly, holding it as my creed,

And a stone lies in the mouth of your silent hater.

May your reign ever rise in honor

[Perhaps: among us]; and may your serenity never be clouded.
