أوهمتني من رِقَّة العُذْر

أوهمتني من رِقَّة العُذْر

أنّ الوفاء يكون بالغَدْرِ

Through your delicate excuse, you led me to believe

that faithfulness could lie in betrayal.

يا من طَويتُ على محبَّته

يا من طَويتُ على محبَّته

كبدي مكافأةً على الهجر

كبدي مكافأةً على الهجر

O you, whose love I enfolded

within my liver, in return for your desertion,

وعصيتُ رُشْدي في غَوَايته

وعصيتُ رُشْدي في غَوَايته

وأطعتُه في السر والجهر

وأطعتُه في السر والجهر

and under whose spell I defied my better judgment,

and whom I obeyed in secret and openly.

إني أحبُّك حبَّ مجتهد

إني أحبُّك حبَّ مجتهد

بلغ النهاية وهو لا يدري

بلغ النهاية وهو لا يدري

Indeed, I love you with the love of one who strives,

who has reached the utmost without knowing it,

لا حبَّ مضطر يكابِده

لا حبَّ مضطر يكابِده

طلبُ الجزاءِ عليه والأجرِ

طلبُ الجزاءِ عليه والأجرِ

not the love of one compelled, beset

by the pursuit of recompense and reward for it.

قِس بي سواي تجِد تفاضل ما

قِس بي سواي تجِد تفاضل ما

قد راح بين الخلّ والجمر

قد راح بين الخلّ والجمر

Compare anyone else with me: you will find the disparity

that lies between vinegar and embers.

لا تجعل التالي كسابقه

ما الواو مثل الراء في عمرو

ما الواو مثل الراء في عمرو

Do not make the follower equal to his predecessor:

the wāw is not like the rāʾ in ʿAmr.

وكذا الإمام معدُّ أكرمُ مَنْ

وكذا الإمام معدُّ أكرمُ مَنْ

تُرجى إغاثتُه على الدّهر

تُرجى إغاثتُه على الدّهر

Likewise, Imam Maʿadd is the most generous of those

whose aid is hoped for against Time.

ملِك كأن الله أفرده

ملِك كأن الله أفرده

دون الورى بالمجد والفخر

دون الورى بالمجد والفخر

A king whom God seems to have singled out

above all mankind for glory and honor.
