    والحزمُ في الجِدّ ليس الحزمُ في اللَّعِب

    The blades of judgment are keener than the edges of swords;

and prudence lies in earnestness, not in play.

Glory is not content with a king's eminence

unless India's swords aid him with their blades.

Nor does anyone find repose sweet

who does not plunge through the rigors of toil to reach it.

And your abandoning a thing because you doubt it

is weakness, and a cause leading to ruin.

If you have doubts about something, erase its darkness:

that better banishes the night of doubt and misgivings.

The highest rank is what you build through striving,

and the finest glory is what you attain through toil.

Spend the night awake at an affair's head, watching it,

and do not spend the night asleep, heedless of it, at its tail.

    Concern over a crisis before it comes is a spur to vigilance;

and whoever shoots the arrows of prudence does not fail.

One may hope to ward off calamities before they strike,

but past misfortunes cannot be undone.

The finest forbearance is forbearance when one has power,

and the sweetest generosity is what comes unasked.

May a station of eminence gladden al-Aziz,

one no king attained in ages past:

a caliphate whose bequeather is Alid by descent,

and a birth of the Prophet's stock and noble ancestry.

You have indeed attained, Abu al-Mansur, a rank

in nobility, overtopping the crowns of all ranks.

You are the one named and hoped for before his birth,

and the fifth, the Qa'im mentioned in the books.

You have never ceased to woo the very souls of eminence,

alone among kings, with India's white blades and gold,

until you sat upon al-Jawza', alone

with her, and kissed her on her cool, sweet mouth.

Noble virtues you have won that no king possessed

in ages past, among non-Arabs or Arabs.

O champion of the faith, of bounty and its seeker,

and knight of speech, of tidings and orations!

May the feast gladden you—you restored good fortune to us in it,

as a help against the misery of the days and turmoil.

You appeared at it like the sun, eclipsing

with its light the radiance of the full moon and shooting stars.

When they looked, their eyes discerned in you

an imam's piety, and they sought refuge in you, a prophet's son.

It sweetens life for me that I am supported by you,

the staunchest of men in upholding kinship and lineage,

the most zealous of men in defending blood relations,

and the most learned of men in honoring merit and in letters,

and that we are two shoots of one branch that binds us

to the kinship bonds of a single grandfather and father.

So from your eminence come my exalted honors,

and from your favors comes whatever wealth I possess.

May you ever remain powerful through the days,

as long as the wind sways the branches and twigs.
