Soothe your heart with hopes, for hopes

hold arrows for the hearts of cares.

And when calamities bolt with you, they have no

    bridle but fortitude and steadfastness.

Events may turn kind after their cruelty,

and the days may turn from the ills they bring.

Can the broad earth hem me in for a moment,

while the earth holds a singing girl and aged wine?

And can my fortune elude me, with a swift steed beneath me,

broad of chest, and a keen sword in my hands?

By God, I shall not meekly endure bitter hurt, nor

shall the tyrannical usurper slay me by stealth,

until the brown lances vanish into kidneys

with piercing thrusts, and heads are reaped by swords.

You two, ply me alone with the cup, for I

am one who has come under its binding claim.

And if a noble drinking companion is at hand for you two,

like me, then wine and aged wine suffice me.

    إنَّ المدام على اللّئام حَرامُ

    And leave the base man to his like and his kind;

indeed, aged wine is forbidden to the base.
