Sometimes I set out early, before dawn breaks,

while night is dark as hair dye,

like injustice, or like oppression, or like treachery,

and the stars of Orion travel through it,

as though measuring it to learn

how many arm-spans and finger-spans it holds for them.

And the Pleiades covet the full moon,

so they follow its trail wherever it goes,

as though pursuing it to avenge a blood debt.

With hounds that fly when they run,

each slender in belly and waist,

so gaunt and lean that they almost

    وافِرة الزَوْر رحيب الصدر

    touch their backbones with their bellies;

    full-breasted, broad-chested,

with jaws gaping a handspan wide,

slit back to the ears, or halfway

    عن مثل أطراف الرماح السُمْر

    along their long, yellow cheeks,

    baring teeth like the tips of brown spears;

so they are more deadly than time's calamities.

Until, when I had ventured deep into the wilderness,

while they overflowed with strength and pride,

frolicking as they ran with drunken abandon,

as though wine's fiery power were within them,

watching with darting, fierce sidelong glances,

the hound-handler sent them hurtling toward ten

wild cattle that had appeared in a row,

    and as many dust-colored gazelles.

So they flew like lightning through the rain,

plunging like a star when it streaks through the night,

swifter than water running in a trench,

until, when they had utterly overpowered

the wild beasts of the open desert beneath hoof-raised dust,

    فهنّ صرعى دمُهنّ يجري

    they left them in the dust like slaughtered camels;

so they lay slain, their blood flowing.

Then I hastily dismounted from my colt,

cutting pieces from their limbs and carving them up,

until my pot boiled atop the hearthstones.

What a hunt you were, hot as glowing coals!

I slaughtered the wild beasts in it—what a slaughter!

Like the Legatee's slaughter of the army of the House of Sakhr.
