Sharp swords ward off harm from those who bear them,

and noble deeds build lofty honors for the noble.

Not everyone whose hands flow with bounty is noble,

nor everyone who enters wars a mighty warrior.

Giving with the hands under compulsion is not commendable

unless stout hearts freely bestow it within the soul.

White, keen-edged swords do not help their companions

unless firm resolves become their edges.

Forbearance is not praiseworthy in a young man's character

    unless fierceness stands beside it.

    فما في منهنَّ إلاَّ العَلاقِمُ

    The days have dealt me bitterness since I knew them;

nothing comes to me from them but bitter colocynth.

    فلا تك مِمَّنْ يلتَوي ويصُارِم

    I made you, my heart, my finest confidant and companion;

do not be among those who turn away and sever ties.

I have seen Time honor only

a noble man who opposes it or a base man who makes peace.

Whatever glory and wealth I have missed in it,

I do not regret, since I gained wisdom therein.

I have hated Time only because,

among loved ones, it wrongs my heart.

Through parting from them, it made me drink its dregs

and venom such as speckled serpents never give.

How often I watched Asma's deceptive lightning,

though my heart knew the falsehood within it.

She consoles me with promises of union,

which I see as weddings, though they are funerals.

With despair's coolness I shall cure this passion's burning thirst,

though separation and reproaches have not cooled it.

And a fair-faced man, whose radiant face the full moon imitates,

whose hands the clouds imitate in generosity:

to you, Commander of the Faithful, we have been borne aloft

by hopes that abide around you, circling.

    بأَيدي العُلا من حَليْهنَّ خواتم

    We have given you poems of pure praise;

their ornaments furnish rings for the hands of glory.

You have never met us without your wealth being spent,

your face smiling, and your honor unharmed.

Your bounty has consumed your wealth, until it seems

your generosity is awake and your wealth asleep.

You rose until every eye became certain

that you are a star rising on the horizon's heights.

You gave until every believer in God's oneness thought

    that you distribute people's livelihoods.

Had Hatim seen your extravagant generosity,

Ka'b and Hatim would have reproached your giving.

May the feast's arrival gladden you, O feast of its people,

you who are an everlasting feast for creation.

On it, good fortune appeared to you from every side,

and Arabs and non-Arabs stood in awe of you.

    وسَيْفُك في العاصِين قاضٍ وحاكمُ

    Your bounty is a great bucketful pouring upon the obedient;

your sword is judge and arbiter among the rebellious.

If an oath-breaker treacherously defies you, he cannot be borne aloft

by the inner and outer feathers of his wings.

If he intends treachery, God reveals his secret

against him and exposes everything he conceals.

For you are truth's sword, and God strikes

with it; you are religion's order, and God its ordainer.

You are none other than God's proof, through which

the earth shone until no disputant remained within it.

Your enemies seek against you what is barred to them

by the flashing, sharp swords between them and you,

and sleek steeds that, when they head toward a land,

seem to fly with their bodies and legs,

and long, solid, brown spear shafts, as though they were

your resolve in battle, while the dust hangs dark.

If you intend to invade them, their death lies

in the enemies' knowing that you are resolved.

Their fear has left them not a hand to raise,

nor left among their champions anyone who can resist.

O victor whenever you meet a warrior,

and O vanquished one when making peace!

Thus you have always been victorious, O son of the Imams,

your wealth taken as spoils, your sword taking spoils.

Thus passed your radiant forefathers, whose deeds

the bestowal of bounty and great battles alike approve.

Had they witnessed your two states, in peace and war,

Lu'ayy and Hashim would gladly have ransomed you.

Your swords hold a slayer for every enemy,

and your resolve a destroyer for every fortress.

    وَصْمتُك في أذْن الزمان هَماهِمُ

    Your staying is a victorious march through the lands;

your silence is murmuring in Time's ear.

    ولم يَهزِم الأيّامَ قبلكَ هازم

    With judgment and courage you defeated Time's calamities;

no conqueror before you had defeated the days.

You mastered everything with such resolve that you left

no creature among mankind who could be called resolute.

You vied in eminence until you met no rival,

and in generosity until you found none to compete.

    وقَصَّرَ منهمْ عنك صِيدٌ أَكارم

    You rivaled the kings of the age and surpassed them;

their proudest nobles fell short of you.

The morning sun is a crown for your kingship on high,

and the bright, glittering stars its pillars.

As though Adam had left no successor but you,

nor begotten another leader to rule creation.

I shall crown my love with praise

for you; my silence about you would reproach me.

Are you not descended from unceasing rainclouds

and full moons attended by lions?

How many an ignorant man offers you sincere affection in his ignorance,

though breaking ties is better than such love.

A little affection guided by reason is useful,

but a young man's ignorant love wounds its benefit.

I offer you sincere affection; its best

and finest quality is that I know you in loving you.

Whenever I conceal it from you, I am certain

that hiding it from you makes me sinful.

Do not class with me a people whom nothing led

to loving you but fear, and then dirhams.

Even if they offered you affection sincerely, there would be

no safeguard for their love against their ignorance of you.

People's differences in merit are plain:

some are human, and some are beasts.

May the nights bestow their bounty upon you—those that appeared

white to us through you, though black and unjust.

If the days of this Time could feel shame,

my reproach of them would never cease.

How can anyone be content with days that have toyed

with him, so their lights are darkness in his eye?

I see people, but most of them are livestock:

many yet few, present yet already lost.

People all alike, who wear the noble man down,

until they seem ailments and illness themselves.

Whoever does not know this about mankind must not

fail to know that, when examined, they are sheep.

An aspiration has shown them to me as small, having reached

where no purpose or aspiration can reach.

    وأشتِهي قُربَها مِنّي وَتنجذِمُ

    God, what a state! I approach it, and it drives me away;

I desire its nearness, yet it breaks away.

Do not blame me for my lot, for they have spread

their deprivation over me—learning and understanding.

The nights have draped their injustice over me; whoever

is wronged by his days will surely suffer wrong.

A stalwart man shall rise in assault to win me victory,

and a cleaving sword whose keen edge never glances off.

I do not praise resolve until sword blades shatter

    and forelocks are harvested by them;

until a youth ranges with spears, the horses gaunt,

    and blood flows between the two great armies;

until waves of assault carry me against the enemy,

making the swords of India keep smiling.

A man's pride lies only in his sword's edge,

not in what words and pen embellish.

    ومَرَّ منه علَّى السُخْنُ والشَبِمُ

    I am the one who has milked Time at all its teats;

its heat and cold have passed over me.

Rage does not exhaust my forbearance when I am deprived of it,

nor practiced restraint my wrath when I take revenge.

I am the son of him whose sword exalted religion,

to whose eminence Arabs and non-Arabs submitted.

I mean Imam Ma'add, the best of those through whom

the caliphate grew fair and human souls rose high.

Glory and honor to you, Commander of the Faithful, for

bounty, glory, and nobility have prayed upon you.

You deafen your ear to anyone reproaching your generosity,

but your hearing has no deafness to bounty's call.

Your glorious honor is protected by kindness,

while the substance of your wealth is shared among petitioners.

Whoever does not seek refuge in you rather than others

finds himself without a refuge on earth.

O proof that prevailed for God and became clear,

until nations were guided by its evidence's radiance!

O liberator of captive hope, delivering it

into ease after poverty had ruined it!

But for Ma'add, Commander of the Faithful, never would

guidance have prevailed or blessings spread in our age.

He extends a hand wherever kindness dwells,

and has a firm footing in every pious affirmation of God's oneness.

Radiant, awe-inspiring, brilliant to his beholder,

he is like a banner among the loftiest of Hashim.

Sweet in disposition, yet stern in character

at times, and gentle, with a proudly aquiline nose.

His birth from Ahmad was pure, and purified

through him were dispositions, lineages, and traits.

Calls to obscenity and baseness meet a 'No' from him,

while his 'Yes' never fails him in a worthy cause.

I seek God's pardon: I cannot count his virtues,

even if all of me were speech and mouth.

How can mankind enumerate the virtues of one

whose equal has not been found among all people?

I have seen no eulogy, save praise of al-Mu'izz,

in which ink, paper, and pen may take pride.

His rule seems guidance and admonition,

and his age a smiling joy for people.

May you keep building glory's pavilion as long as there rises

a sun, and seasonal rains and steady showers pour.

Here, take it: its passing thought delights the minds,

and letters and wisdom adorn themselves with it.

It seems to its listener, whenever it passes

through his hearing, to be a 'bow of an oath' [final phrase unclear].
