O you who urge your mount onward,

When longing and memories spurred you

    Toward Baghdad, kept sleepless

By journeys through the night and at dawn,

Turn aside to the Euphrates' waters and stop,

As a lovesick man stands, apologizing

For one restless with longing for it,

Who never turns away from remembering it.

    For there, time is young,

And youth is lush, yielding its juice.

O hills of al-Qatul, may they never bear me far

    From you—the days and fate.

    Every hope within my soul

I fold away for you and keep in store.

And soon you may be visited, with me brought along,

By a triumph no other triumph can match.

Then, among your heights, we shall find unclouded

The sweetness of life, without a trace of trouble.
