O you who allude to your own tears

by saying, “I wiped saffron perfume from my cheek,”

why did you not proclaim your love, when

you were enslaved by love and filled with longing,

and reveal that you were mingling

gushing tears with your heart’s blood,

and pluck from the beloved’s cheek

the anemone with your eyes’ glance,

and kiss the pearls of his mouth,

    sipping wine and saliva,

and abandon your saying about tears,

ʿAbd Allāh: “I scattered agates from my eyes”?

Love is indeed sweet, so be

    persistent in it and clear-headed.
