    O Time, how cruel you are, so fickle

    In both your states, and how seldom fair!

    Do you go forth as a helper to the base ignoramus,

    And as a keen-edged sword against the wise, noble man?

    وإذا وفَيتَ نَقَضْتَ أَسباب الوفا

    And when you grow clear, you turn murky—a miser’s way;

    And when you keep faith, you undo the bonds of faithfulness.

    I do not accept you, even if you grow clear, for I

    Know that you do not remain clear.

    An age that, when it gives, takes back its gift,

    And when it goes straight, changes its mind and veers aside.

    أَوْلَى بنا ما قلّ منك وما كفى

    Your good, O Time, does not make up for its evil;

    A little from you, just enough, is better for us.
