أيّها الفاضل الّذي فَضَل العا

أيّها الفاضل الّذي فَضَل العا

لَمَ في فهمه فليس يرامُ

لَمَ في فهمه فليس يرامُ

O excellent one, who surpassed

O virtuous one who excels the eminent in understanding

the world in understanding and cannot be matched:

None aspires to comprehend him, he is unmatched

أنت في الفضل والمكارم سَبّا

أنت في الفضل والمكارم سَبّا

قٌ وفي القول شاعرٌ مِقدام

قٌ وفي القول شاعرٌ مِقدام

you are, in excellence and noble deeds,

You are foremost in merit and generosity, preceding

foremost, and in speech a bold poet.

All others in discourse, an intrepid poet

وصل النثُر مِن كلامك بالسِّح

وصل النثُر مِن كلامك بالسِّح

ر عنه ووافَى بالمعجز الاِنتظام

ر عنه ووافَى بالمعجز الاِنتظام

The prose of your speech was joined to

Your prose attains the miracles of rhythm and composition

magic from it; its ordered composition brought marvels.

Surpassing it, embodied in marvelous harmony

فقضينا فيه ذِمامَك إذ لي

فقضينا فيه ذِمامَك إذ لي

س لخَلق سواك عندي ذمام

س لخَلق سواك عندي ذمام

Thus we fulfilled our obligation to you in it, for

Thus I dispelled your bridle, for none but you

no creature besides you has a claim upon me.

In my eyes, deserves a bridle

وتورّدتُ منكَ بحراً نبتْ عن

وتورّدتُ منكَ بحراً نبتْ عن

نيلِ تيّار فضلهِ الأوهامُ

نيلِ تيّار فضلهِ الأوهامُ

And I approached a sea in you, whose

And I attained from you an ocean that sprang from

current of excellence imagination could not reach—

The overwhelming currents of its imagination

من معانٍ كأنّهنّ الغواني

من معانٍ كأنّهنّ الغواني

تحت لفظٍ كأنّه بسّامُ

تحت لفظٍ كأنّه بسّامُ

a sea of meanings like lovely women

With meanings like melodies beneath words

beneath wording that seems to smile.

That resemble unsheathed swords

تَرجَمَ الّلفظُ عن سَناه كما تَر

تَرجَمَ الّلفظُ عن سَناه كما تَر

جَم عن واضح النهار الظلامُ

جَم عن واضح النهار الظلامُ

The wording revealed its radiance, just as

The words translate their gleam as the darkness

darkness revealed the brightness of day.

Translates the radiance of broad daylight

عجباً إنه يقوم مقام الرْ

عجباً إنه يقوم مقام الرْ

راح في الارتياح وهو كلام

راح في الارتياح وهو كلام

How wondrous: it takes the place

Strangely, it takes the place of cool comfort

of wine in bringing delight, though it is speech.

Though it is but speech

ليت شعري أعاره الروض حَليْا

ليت شعري أعاره الروض حَليْا

أم كستْه سعودَها الأيّام

أم كستْه سعودَها الأيّام

I wonder: did the garden lend it adornment,

I wonder, did the garden lend it ornament

or did the days clothe it in their good fortune?

Or did the days dress it in felicity

أم غدا مَذهبُ التَّناسُخ حقّاً

أم غدا مَذهبُ التَّناسُخ حقّاً

فرمى فيك روحَه النَّظَّام

فرمى فيك روحَه النَّظَّام

Or has the doctrine of transmigration become true,

Or did the doctrine of transmigration become truth

so that al-Nazzam cast his spirit into you?

And the soul of An-Nazzam transmigrated into you

أم تناولت للبلاغة بعدي

أم تناولت للبلاغة بعدي

خطّةً نام عنك فيها الأنام

خطّةً نام عنك فيها الأنام

Or did you attain in eloquence, after me,

Or did you take after my rhetoric

a station where mankind slept, unaware of you?

While people slept, in a unique manner

إن يكن للوفاء والفضل والفه

إن يكن للوفاء والفضل والفه

م حُسامٌ فأنت ذاك الحسام

م حُسامٌ فأنت ذاك الحسام

If loyalty, excellence, and

If merit, generosity and understanding possess

understanding have a keen sword, you are that sword.

A sword, then you are that sword
