O Beloved, may there never depart

from your hills blossoms and radiance.

For every beloved has a lover,

and all people are lovers of you.

As though beauty, with all its brilliance,

were poured upon the soil of your land.

And every eye is enchanted by you,

and every heart longs for you.

    When your yearning narcissus gazes

    with eyes cast down,

as though a spiteful foe had startled them,

ever quick to bring all they detest,

so, at his sudden coming, there turned white

their eye sockets, and yellow their pupils.

And the eglantine smiles around them,

    its mouth polished and gleaming.

And the myrtle has despaired of meeting,

    so it quivers with trembling,

its branches interlacing as it sways:

when one stem bends, it rises over another.

A floating water lily surrounds it,

in the water, where drowning cannot destroy it,

as though fastened around its heads were

    collars of sulfur smoke.

A waterwheel serves it in watering,

    bleary-eyed, its eye-corner never drying.

And a plant of tender green: draped are

its leaves over the pupils of the eye,

as though a lover had playfully pinched it,

or the strain of time had afflicted it.

And the dew's weeping abashed the rose,

so it reddened, its blush drawn forth.

All of you, O Beloved, is what

every gaze has come to yearn for.

As though what lies within you were painted—

    wondrous blossoms—by a master painter.

You have made the flowers equal in their growth,

as though your gaze were a maker of leaves.
