My poetry, though it clothes glory in pearls, does not

reach a tenth of what you possess—so forgive me.

I know my fault, even if I am,

when I speak, the finest poet of all.

The opposing qualities of your excellence dazzled me when

they gathered in you, in pairs and singly.

You are a sun, and you are a radiant full moon.

Not everyone who wishes it becomes a sun and a full moon.

And they say there is a sea upon the earth.

They have lied: only your two palms are a sea.

They have not seen your palms casting pearls,

and silver and uncoined gold whenever those palms pour forth.

I have filled the sky with prayers for you,

and filled the lands and the earth with gratitude.
