    ودَيْنُ الصَّبِّ مَمْطولُ

    Lovers' blood is shed unavenged,

    And the ardent lover's due is deferred;

    The sword of the glance is drawn,

    And whoever reveals love is reproached,

    Even if he does not heed the reproacher.

    If love does not become apparent,

    And the ardent lover is not laid bare,

    Nor does the heart divulge his secret,

    فَبحْ يأيّها الكاتِمْ

    Then all he has claimed is a lie;

    So speak out, O you who conceal.

    And a dark-eyed one with an enchanting gaze

    Surpasses all that description can encompass,

    جَنَتْ ألحاظُه حَتفي

    Lovely in coquetry and elegance;

    His glances brought about my death:

    Who will grant redress against a wrongdoer?

    Magic obeyed his eyelids,

    ومادَ بِردْفِه الخَصْرُ

    And the full moon humbled itself before his face;

    His waist swayed beneath his hips,

    فقلبُ محِبِّه هائمْ

    And pearls resembled his teeth;

    So his lover's heart is lost in longing.

    He rebukes me for my love,

    And abandons me without fault,

    As though I were not an ardent lover

    Of the wine of his sweet saliva.

    Is there no merciful one in love?

    A gazelle whose glance is his snare,

    لو أني كنت أَمْتلِكُهْ

    And a full moon whose robe is his celestial sphere;

    If only I could possess him,

    Then I would plunder what his drawstrings enclose,

    As a victor plunders his spoils.

    Avenge my blood upon the spears of his stature,

    And the beauty of his rosy cheek,

    And the night of his curly hair,

    And the heaviness of his full, rounded rump,

    And the unceasing languor of his eyes.

    When will he attain union

    And banish injustice with justice—

    A lover forever deranged,

    Robbed of patience and reason,

    Grief-stricken, wasted, and lovesick?

    By the beauty of those wide eyes,

    And the grip of bracelet and anklet

    Upon those full-fleshed limbs,

    And saliva like the harvest of bees,

    And a mouth that entices the lightning-watcher,

    Ask the sun that rose

    عسى ترثى لمن قَتَلَتْ

    Upon us and then did not set;

    Perhaps she will pity the one she killed

    With her two eyes, though she did not know.

    For a wrongdoer may be moved to mercy.

    Indeed, by the bashful, golden maidens,

    Resembling the full moon's radiance

    And the hues of smooth red stones,

    They have indeed kindled in my breast

    A passion that does not sleep.

    And wine awakens delight,

    يُثير مِزاجُها حَبَبَا

    And revives elegance and refinement;

    Its mixing raises bubbles

    In which you imagine young locusts' eyes,

    And pearls strung by the necklace-maker.

    Indeed, by the Great Jamra,

    And Zamzam, al-Safa, and Mina,

    And whoever chanted the pilgrim's call there and prayed,

    And circled the House, then performed the ritual walk,

    Lean-bellied, humble, standing in prayer:

    Indeed, he has become a successor for us—

    وأَصبحَ خامسَ الخُلَفا

    Nizar—and has built up honor;

    And has become the fifth of the caliphs,

    And his striving has revived the forebears,

    So he has become an upholder of guidance.

    نَدىً واستخدَمَ الهِمما

    An imam who rivaled the steady rains

    In bounty, and made aspirations his servants;

    And won glory and generosity,

    And became a beacon among mankind,

    A noble one rising to the heights.

    When he vies with kings, he rises above them,

    ولَم يَلْق العُفاةَ بلا

    And if asked for bounty, he bestows it;

    He never meets petitioners with 'No',

    And quenches bright swords and spears,

    And goes forth taking vengeance on his enemies.

    His lineage grew in glory,

    His renown reached the stars,

    فَصرْفُ الدهر يَحْذَرُهُ

    And his appearance surpassed the full moon;

    So the vicissitudes of time fear him:

    Unbowed, gentle, decisive.

    Peerless in his virtues,

    Noble in his ancestry,

    He gives freely of his bounty,

    And loves his petitioner's words:

    Generous, prudent, resolute.

    He built eminence and glory,

    And won gratitude and praise,

    وشدَّ المُلْك فاشْتَدّا

    And became peerless among mankind;

    He strengthened the realm, and it grew strong,

    And became the stringer of its necklace.

    It is as though his brow were the moon,

    فليس يَفُوتُه ظَفَرُ

    And his decisive judgment were destiny;

    No victory escapes him,

    Nor can fear ambush him,

    Perched upon the crest of eminence.

    Great in his humility,

    Illustrious in his benefactions,

    He gives generously to whoever obeys him,

    And severs the bond of whoever cuts him off,

    Hovering above his eminence.

    The sword fears his might,

    ويَهْوَى المجدُ غُرّتَهُ

    And the spear dreads his brandishing;

    Glory loves his radiant brow,

    And generosity approves his character,

    For his cloud pours rain.

    When he is reckoned by his generosity,

    And advances upon his lofty ambitions,

    He rises with the stars beneath his foot,

    And time becomes one of his servants,

    And he leads the lofty men of Hashim.

    Whenever he is asked, he is not miserly,

    جوادٌ إن يَقُلْ يَفعلْ

    And gives before he is asked;

    Generous: if he speaks, he acts,

    And resembles his grandfather, the Messenger,

    Knowing what mankind does not know.

    Noble in striving and praised,

    Renowned for dispensing kindness,

    And remembered for eminence,

    Victorious over enemies,

    With none to mar his glory.

    For God has given him

    The entirety of what he wished for,

    And favored him and exalted him,

    وليس لفضلهِ جاذِمْ

    And established him and pleased him;

    And none can sever his excellence.

    بِلاَ نِدّ ولا مِثْلِ

    God fashioned him for excellence,

    Without rival or peer;

    So he made the apportionment of justice equitable,

    And satisfied generosity through giving,

    A distributor of mankind's livelihoods.

    And when my poetry could not encompass

    Your lofty merits, nor could my thought,

    I made praise akin to gratitude,

    For you are the sovereign of the age,

    Of the illustrious sons of Fatima.

    And how can gratitude attain

    Recompense for you—or remembrance do so—

    When not even rainfall can equal you,

    Nor does the sea resemble you

    هو البدر الّذي طَلَعا

    In bounty that drowns those who press near?

    He is the full moon that has risen;

    هو الَغْيث الّذي اندفعا

    He is the dawn that has shone;

    He is the rain that has poured forth;

    He is the sword that has cut

    With both its edges and its hilt.

    So may you never cease to follow right guidance,

    Amid prosperity and good fortune,

    Exalted in rank and dignity,

    Unblemished in excellence and glory,

    And the nose of whoever refuses be rubbed in dust.
