قدonce كنتُI used to أرْكَبundertake فيin هواكlove of you مَسَاءتيmy suffering
فعْلَas the act of المحبّthe lover الصبّthe lovesick بالمحبوبِwith the beloved
I used to embrace my own suffering for love of you,
I used to ride the waves of your love in the evenings,
As a lovesick lover does with his beloved.
Doing what passionate lovers do for their beloved.
وأجودand I give generously بالنّفسwith the soul النفيسةprecious جاهداًstriving
لكfor you فيin الهوىlove ويَطيبُand is sweet ليto me تَعْذيبيmy torment
And generously offer my precious soul, striving
I struggled to be generous with my precious soul,
For you in love, while my torment was sweet to me,
Loving you and finding my torment sweet.
كيماso that أراكI may see you علىupon الوفاءِfaithfulness وأجْتَنيand I may reap
مَعْسولَthe honeyed sweetness of وَصْلِكunion with you وهوwhile it is غيرnot مَشُوبtainted
So that I might see you faithful, and reap
So I would see you faithful, and gain from you
The honeyed sweetness of union with you, untainted.
A pure draught of your union, unmingled.
فَغَدرتَthen you betrayed غيرَwithout مُغَادِرdeparting وقطَعتand you severed غيfirst part of 'without'
رcompletion of 'without' مُقَاطِعsevering ties وأرَبْتَand you stirred doubt غيرَwithout being مُرِيبِsuspect
Then you betrayed without leaving, and cut off without
But you betrayed, gave no warning, and broke off abruptly,
Severing ties, and stirred doubt without being suspect.
Deceived me, though I did not suspect you.
غالَطتُI deceived عقليmy reason فيin هواكlove of you وفِطْنتيand my discernment
حُسْنُthe beauty of الوفاءfaithfulness بصحّةthrough the soundness of التَّركيبconstitution
I deceived my reason and discernment in loving you;
I was at fault for passion and poor judgment -
The beauty of faithfulness lies in a sound constitution.
Thinking you perfectly faithful.
فالعذرُso the excuse عذريmy excuse إذsince جعلتُكI made you حاكماًa ruler
فيin القلبthe heart منِّيof mine والذنوبُand the sins ذنوبيmy sins
So the excuse is mine, since I made you ruler
So blame me, for I appointed you as judge
Within this heart of mine; and the sins are mine.
Over my heart, and the sins are mine.
واللهby God لاnever استمتعتُshall I enjoy منكfrom you بنظرةin a glance
ولوeven if أنّكthat you are المَعْزِيthe one traced by descent إلىto يعقوبJacob
By God, never shall I enjoy a glance from you,
By God, if you had but glanced at me
Even if you were the one descended from Jacob.
I'd have rejoiced, as Jacob at the scent of Joseph.
قدonce كنتyou were أحسنَmore beautiful مِنthan مُنَاقَلَةthe passing around of الثناpraise
فكسوتthen you clothed وجهَكyour face وَحْشةthe bleakness of التّأنيبreproach
You were once lovelier than praise passed from mouth to mouth;
I'd have been better not to gaze at your face,
Then you clothed your face in the bleakness of reproach.
Now darkened with reproof.
