بَعَثْتُها مِن صِرْف راحٍ قَرْقَف

بَعَثْتُها مِن صِرْف راحٍ قَرْقَف

كأَنها ياقوتَةٌ في شَنَفِ

كأَنها ياقوتَةٌ في شَنَفِ

I sent it, drawn from unmixed, shiver-inducing wine,

I sent it from a pitcher of wine

as though it were a ruby in an earring,

As if it were a ruby in a chalice

أو أَرَجٌ في قَدَحٍ مُسْتَطْرف

أو أَرَجٌ في قَدَحٍ مُسْتَطْرف

يَحْلِفُ مَنْ يَشربها بالمصحف

يَحْلِفُ مَنْ يَشربها بالمصحف

or fragrance in an exquisite cup.

Or basil in a polished goblet

Whoever drinks it swears by the Qur’an

He who drinks it swears by the Quran

بأنها لو لم تَفُح لم تُعْرف

بأنها لو لم تَفُح لم تُعْرف

that, had it not given off fragrance, it would not have been recognized.

That if it did not exhale fragrance, it would not be recognized
