I love my enemy for your sake, and the spiteful man who

Tells tales against us, and the spy who prowls,

Because, for love of you, they have become

Acquaintances of mine whom I cannot fend off.

But for you, I would not have deceived my heart and soul,

Nor turned my suffering for you into gain in the eyes of the world.

And if I could please you only with my eye,

I would give you both eyes, my heart, and my hearing.

Nor have sound judgment and its paths left my heart,

But love's keen sword strikes it hard.
