I have accepted the judgment of fate ordained of old,

even though it has come to cloud my water's clarity.

And can the people of earth untie

a knot bound from above heaven?

How long will calamities tear down my pillar

and pelt me with injustice and aggression?

Time punishes me for no sin,

and my hand and my chosen ones forsake me.

And I am denounced to someone; were an informer to come

to me denouncing him, that informer would be dyed with blood.

My life is spent among slanderers or the envious,

and informers against me who delight in my prolonged affliction.

So if a wrongdoer spreads lies against me,

then patience with what is destined and decreed!

And I, O Abu al-Mansur, am nothing but,

    as you know, wholly faithful.

Do you know how devoted I was to you,

and how, long ago, you saw what I thought of you?

Is it when you have gained dominion over me and all the people,

and have become caliph in this expanse,

and when I hoped for your help—for I

through your reign attain my utmost hope—

that one who hates me comes to you, denouncing me,

seeking in secret to diminish me in your eyes?

So he slanders me and returns unharmed, without

the bonds of brotherhood rousing you against him.

And even if you have not accepted a word from him,

then you ought to strike him with the hand of calamity.

And you have brought me to my hope; complete it,

may your safety be complete for as long as you live.

And do not trouble my mind by listening

to a slanderer against me whose edifice lies in ruins.

For you have made my life sweet with joy,

and you have eased my mind in prosperity.

And my life grows sweeter, if it is not

clouded before you by the sons of fornication.
