Give me drink, you two, over the grape clusters, from what

The hands pressed from them long ago.

What do you think of the vine—how it has arrayed rubies

And revealed emeralds strung in order?

It appears to the eye as berries, yet conceals

    Honey sealed within its vessels.

Arranged like singing girls’ forelocks, and like honey

In taste, and like perfume in fragrance.

    لو أَصابوا القياسَ قالوا الكريما

    They erred when they called the vine ‘karm’;

Had they made the right comparison, they would have said ‘karim’—the generous one.

So give me drink, O drinking companion, and drink from my cup,

And share the merriment and bliss between us.

May I never drink wine unless I honor

My drinking companion above myself over wine.
