Give me a promise, so my longing may find rest

In it, and I may hope for it, even if it is untrue.

I console myself by awaiting its fulfillment,

And with it cure my heart's disquiet and the suffering I endure.

For I have seen rain: its thunder sends forth

Clouds and lightning; then the rain follows both in torrents.

And is there a delight sweeter and gentler in its effect

Than a promise, through which lovers keep love alive?
