Drunkenness in Askar is, to me, dignity.
Intoxication in the intoxicated is dignified in my view
So there, cast off your bridle for revelry.
So cast off inhibitions and indulge in revelry
ولاand do not تطِعobey فيin نَشْوةٍintoxication لائماًa reprover
ولا تطِع في نَشْوةٍ لائماً
إنّindeed قبولaccepting الّلومreproach فيin السُّكرdrunkenness عارdisgrace
إنّ قبول الّلوم في السُّكر عار
And in intoxication, obey no reprover:
And heed not the blamer in your rapture
accepting reproach in drunkenness is disgrace.
For accepting blame in drunkenness is shameful

وحلمَه في لَطَفٍ واختصار
And take it: it steals a young man's mind
It robs the youth of his senses
and his self-control, gently and in short order.
And his wisdom in gentle moderation

ولَّد قَرْعُ الماء فيها اصفرار
Red in the cup; but if it is diluted,
Ruby red in the goblet, if it glows
the water's impact produces a yellow hue in it.
The clink of water in it yellows

In a goblet of mine, whose match is
In a goblet I have, resembling
only water's clarity and the light of day.
Only the limpid water and light of day

As though the cupbearer, when he pours it
As if the pourer, when he fills it
into its clarity, were mingling snow and fire.
Mixes together ice and fire

So go at evening, felled by wine, if you are among
So delight in the slain by pleasure, if you are one
its devotees, and go at dawn with your bridle cast off.
Who is familiar with it, and leave off chastity

Do you not see the Nile and the morning breeze
strings little rings of mail across it?
Braiding small emeralds in it

Or the silent-bangled hands you the cup

Sweetly dark, and cooled by the dew

As if the mole on her cheek in her beauty
were night, its darkness appearing in daylight.
Is a night that shows its wing in daylight

Is, by God, an ass through and through
