Dawn stirred me to the morning draught as it appeared

through the darkness, like a noble steed’s white blaze.

And a breeze steeped in the fragrance of the

garden revives one from a hangover and heals.

with air so soft and gentle.

It is coolness for the burning ache of every heart,

and fragrance wafting into every nostril.

Whenever it blows, vigor rises within us,

and delight in all music and revelry.

And the crescent in the west seems to resemble

a dead man summoned by the one who takes souls.

And the clouds, as they scatter the

rain, are like a lover weeping over parting from a beloved.

So give me drink, for the beauty of the

day is complete in every aspect, my two companions.

And pass round the wine unmixed; or else,

give it to me mixed, if you both so wish,

in cups that almost elude the

eyes, so fine and thin is their transparent glass,

bearing a secret of the wine,

too subtle for any ear or eye to sense.

soul thereby; God is on my side in taking revenge.

Sometimes the hopeful deem a thing far off,

though it is so near, like something within one’s grasp.

I trust in God, and He knows me better

than I know myself—what I love and what I conceal.
