فَواهاًso, how I yearn! علىfor ذاتthe woman with اللَّمَىdarkness of the lips كلَّماwhenever نأتْgrew distant
فَواهاً على ذات اللَّمَى كلَّما نأتْ
بهاwith her الدّارthe dwelling واستولىand took control عليّover me صدودُهاher rejection
بها الدّار واستولى عليّ صدودُها
Ah, for the dark-lipped one, whenever far away
her dwelling lies, and her rejection overwhelms me.
تَضَنُّshe is sparing ببذلwith granting الوصلunion فيin القربnearness والنوىand separation
تَضَنُّ ببذل الوصل في القرب والنوى
فسَّيانِso, both are alike عنديto me قربُهاher nearness وبعيدهاand her remoteness
فسَّيانِ عندي قربُها وبعيدها
She begrudges granting union, in nearness and separation;
so her nearness and her remoteness are alike to me.
وأقبحُand the ugliest ماthat which فيin الماجِدthe noble man الحُرِّthe freeborn بخلُهhis stinginess
وأقبحُ ما في الماجِد الحُرِّ بخلُه
وأقبحand the ugliest ماthat which عندin الخريدةthe maiden جودهاher generosity
وأقبح ما عند الخريدة جودها
And the ugliest trait in a noble, freeborn man is his stinginess,
and the ugliest trait in a maiden is her generosity.
إذاwhenever رُمتُI seek تشبيهاa comparison لهاfor her حالintervened بينهbetween it
إذا رُمتُ تشبيها لها حال بينه
وبينيand between me خِصالqualities كلَّevery يومday تزيدهاenhance her
وبيني خِصال كلَّ يوم تزيدها
Whenever I seek a comparison for her, there stand between it
and me qualities that enhance her every day.
