O Giver of souls to humankind and jinn,

Indeed, I have occupied my heart with two perils.

In love I joined heartache and happiness,

And made a single love that takes hold of both eyes.

He attained perfection in beauty and in youth,

As though he walks bearing two moons.

He sways gently and speaks in a ringing voice,

And captures my soul in the blink of an eye.

Alluring, rapturous in longing and meeting,

And his qualities are gold and the gleam of silver.

His eyes show no restraint toward one who follows love,

Like one who tears out my soul with two slayers.

As soon as he gazes or his palm touches mine,

My heart and my mind both grow drunk.

If my heart strayed from love's brief hours,

I surrendered it—my heart—to one with two Saqars.

I turned away, shunning the torments of heartache,

So I returned branded with Hunayn's shoe.

I pledged to my heart that I would turn away from love,

So I fell lovesick; I did not repay my debt.

If my passion lies in longing and in meeting,

Then what recourse have I but to mount two sins?
