I lay sleepless, and my night would not end.

And truly I do not know what to say.

As though the night had no end.

And the night of one afflicted by calamity is long.

And our earth, because of what has befallen it, is now

plunging with us, and has almost vanished.

    (تَكَادُ بِنَا جَوانِبُهَا تَمِيلُ)

    The earth almost enfolds us all;

its sides almost tilt with us.

Indeed, our calamity has grown immense and grave,

and wailing over our humiliation is warranted.

O Messenger of God, pardon me, my beloved.

Because of what the foes have done, my soul ebbs away.

For the images the foes have drawn,

which offend you, are the grievous calamity.

And how can life in this world be sweet

when the Messenger is reviled on earth?

A prophet who used to clear doubt away from us,

the Prophet of goodness, who has no equal.

He truly removes the rust from hearts

through what is revealed to him and what he says.

And he guides us, and we do not fear going astray,

for his path—how excellent a path it is!

We see the mercies of the Lord of the Throne coming in succession

upon us, and the Messenger is our guide.

And indeed the Messenger uttered a truthful saying:

    “Keep to my Sunnah”—beautiful guidance.

Take heed: hold it fast with your teeth and follow it,

for in it is goodness; you have no alternative.

So when we abandoned it, we became wretched,

and the road of our misery is a long road.

O Messenger of God, this poetry of mine is for you,

and my deepest wish is acceptance from you.

    بهَا عَنْ قَدْرِكَ السَّامِي أَصُولُ

    O Messenger of God, my poems are swords;

with them I fight in defense of your exalted stature.

And they have done you no harm, O Messenger of God,

for your light is never overtaken by setting.

The steadfast mountains in every land may vanish,

yet love for you, my beloved, never vanishes.

O Messenger of God, I would ransom you with my life,

and my life, my master, is but a small thing.

O Messenger of God, long have I yearned

to meet you—when, then, shall I arrive?
